Wildfire Smoke PM2.5 Is Not Household Soil — and It Cannot Be Treated Like It
Standard carpet cleaning pre-spray is formulated for mineral soil, body oils, food residue, and general organic matter. It is typically alkaline in the pH 9 to 10 range — appropriate for breaking the bond between everyday household soil and synthetic carpet fibre. PM2.5 from wildfire combustion bonds to carpet fibre through a chemical mechanism that standard pre-spray at standard concentration and dwell time does not fully break.
The PM2.5 particle is between 0.1 and 2.5 microns in diameter — small enough to penetrate deep into the carpet pile and bond to the fibre surface at the microscopic level. The chemistry required to address it needs to be alkaline at pH 11 to 12 for severe smoke contamination, with 10 to 15 minutes of dwell time on the carpet surface before extraction begins. Without this, the surface smell reduces and the source in the lower pile remains.
