What Is the Difference Between Carpet Cleaning and Upholstery Cleaning?
People ask us this regularly — usually when they are booking a carpet clean and wondering whether to add the sofa. The short answer is that carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning address similar problems using related methods, but the equipment, the chemistry, the technique, and the risk profile are different enough that they should be treated as separate disciplines. A company that is excellent at carpet cleaning is not automatically excellent at upholstery cleaning — and a company that does not understand the difference can damage your furniture while doing a perfectly acceptable job on your floors.

The Surface They Are Cleaning
Wall-to-wall carpet is a fixed surface. It is stretched over a foam pad and tacked to strips around the room perimeter. Hot water can be injected into the pile and extracted immediately by high-vacuum suction. The pad beneath absorbs some moisture. The subfloor provides a stable base. The carpet dries in place. If slightly more moisture is applied than ideal, the pad absorbs the excess and the carpet dries without significant consequences.
Upholstery is a completely different substrate. It is a textile wrapped around foam, down, or fibre fill, attached to a frame, with seams, welting, piping, and often multiple fabric types in different sections of the same piece. There is no pad beneath it to buffer moisture — if water passes through the fabric surface, it sits in the foam fill and can take days to dry, promoting mould and mildew. The fabric itself may be any of dozens of fibre types, each with specific chemistry requirements. And critically, unlike carpet which is a single product type with relatively predictable behaviour, upholstery fabrics include materials that will be permanently damaged by water.
The Fabric Code Problem — Why This Is the Most Important Difference
Every piece of upholstered furniture manufactured for the consumer market has a care code on the fabric label, usually found on the underside of a seat cushion or on the frame behind a removable cushion. This code tells you — and should tell your cleaner — what chemistry can safely be used on that fabric.
W means water-based cleaning agents only. Standard hot water extraction is appropriate.
S means solvent-based cleaning agents only. Water-based methods will damage the fabric — causing shrinkage, colour bleeding, or permanent pile distortion. Most velvet upholstery is S-coded. Some wool-blend and acetate fabrics are S-coded.
WS means either water-based or solvent-based methods are safe.
X means no liquid cleaning of any kind — professional dry extraction or vacuuming only.
Carpet does not have fabric codes because the product type — synthetic or natural fibre pile over foam pad — is relatively predictable in how it responds to hot water extraction. Upholstery has fabric codes because the product type is not predictable at all. A carpet cleaner who applies the same water-based extraction method to your upholstery that they apply to your carpet — without checking the fabric code — will permanently damage any S-coded piece they touch. Velvet sofas cleaned with water-based methods develop pile distortion that cannot be reversed. The fabric looks streaked, matted, and worn. It was neither worn nor damaged before the clean.
This is not a hypothetical risk. We regularly receive calls from Medford homeowners whose velvet or wool-blend upholstery was damaged by a carpet cleaner who did not check the fabric code before spraying. In most cases the damage is permanent.
The Equipment Differences
Carpet cleaning uses a truck-mounted or portable hot water extraction machine with a wand designed for flat horizontal surfaces. The wand glides across the carpet pile, injects water and chemistry, and extracts immediately under high suction. The geometry of a carpet — flat, accessible, consistent pile depth across the whole surface — suits this tool perfectly.
Upholstery cleaning uses a smaller, hand-held upholstery tool with a different injection and extraction profile calibrated for lower moisture application and gentler suction on fabric surfaces. The tool needs to manoeuvre around seams, piping, corners, arms, and backs of furniture. It needs to apply significantly less moisture than a carpet wand — the foam fill of a sofa cushion holds moisture very differently from a carpet pad, and over-wetting causes problems that take days to resolve.
A carpet cleaner using a carpet wand on upholstery applies too much moisture, too much pressure, and too much heat for most fabric types. The result is over-wetting, slow drying, potential mould in the foam fill, and in some fabrics, pile distortion or colour bleeding that is not reversible.
The Chemistry Differences
Carpet pre-spray chemistry is typically alkaline — pH 9 to 11 depending on the soil load. This is appropriate for synthetic carpet fibres (nylon, polyester, polypropylene) which tolerate alkaline chemistry well and which represent the majority of residential carpet in Medford homes.
Upholstery chemistry has to be matched to the specific fibre type. Wool and wool-blend upholstery requires pH-neutral chemistry — alkaline agents above pH 8 begin to damage wool fibres. Upholstery dries more slowly because the foam fill retains moisture longer than carpet pad, and because air circulation around the three-dimensional surface of a sofa or chair is less even than across a flat floor. Well-executed upholstery cleaning using low-moisture technique with a proper upholstery tool typically dries in 4 to 6 hours. Over-wetted upholstery — the result of using carpet equipment or technique on furniture — can take 12 to 24 hours and may develop a mildew smell in the foam fill that is extremely difficult to address once established.

The mechanism — pre-treatment to break the bond between soil and fibre, followed by extraction to remove the loosened contamination — is the same. The difference is that carpet is a relatively forgiving substrate and upholstery is not. The margin for error on a carpet — slightly too much moisture, slightly too much alkalinity — is wide. The margin for error on an S-coded velvet sofa is essentially zero. This is why upholstery cleaning, done correctly, requires a separate assessment, separate chemistry selection, and separate equipment from carpet cleaning — even when both are done on the same visit by the same company.
